One thing farmers can do that might significantly decrease the problems they face when siting a livestock operation is to get help before deciding to grow their livestock farms – and much of that help is available from Farm Bureau and its ag partners:
- The Indiana Livestock Team, a partnership among INFB, Indiana Pork and the Indiana Corn and Soybean Alliance, helps producers anticipate the issues they could face when they build or expand an operation. For more information, contact INFB livestock development specialist Greg Slipher by phone 317-692-7886 or email.
- Farmers Deliver, a series of fact sheets that help demonstrate the economic contributions that farming makes on a local basis. These also were developed by the Indiana Livestock Team partnership.
- Spokesperson training, which teaches farmers how to have useful conversations on these topics. The focus isn’t really on public speaking, but on talking to people in casual settings. “Our farmers must get better at telling their story,” Slipher said. For more information, contact Slipher.
