Students in 25 Marion County classrooms went home with Indiana Farm Bureau’s 2019 Book of the Year thanks to a generous donation from Marion County Farm Bureau.
Marion County Farm Bureau donated 800 copies of Compost Stew: An A to Z Recipe for the Earth to help introduce urban children to agriculture. During the first week of October, 15 volunteers from Indiana Farm Bureau and Marion County Farm Bureau read the story to the classrooms before distributing the books to the students.
A local FFA chapter also participated in these readings. The official Compost Stew Facebook page even made a special post about the event.
For Marion County Farm Bureau President Jack Haefling, this event was a great opportunity to educate local youth while keeping it fun.
“As a Farm Bureau in an urban county, we’re always looking for ways to educate Marion County residents about agriculture in our state,” said Haefling. “It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to go into a few of our schools and give them something to take home to their families that’s both educational and fun.”
So far, 550 children in 25 different pre-K and kindergarten classes at five schools have been reached by the program.
Indiana Farm Bureau’s Book of the Year is a part of the Agriculture in the Classroom program. Through this program, volunteers across Indiana visit classrooms and help kids understand how and where the food they eat is grown.
