The Indiana General Assembly was entering its final days as this issue of The Hoosier Farmer went to press, and some of the bills Indiana Farm Bureau has been following closely have already made it to the governor’s desk.
INFB’s priority water legislation passed both chambers by unanimous votes and was signed by Gov. Mike Braun on April 16. Hoosier high-capacity groundwater well users will have a process in place to report and rectify water loss once the bill goes into effect, which is July 1 of this year.
This is a major win for farmers across the state, according to INFB’s public policy team, and INFB was encouraged to see widespread support by the General Assembly.
INFB was in attendance on March 25 to witness Gov. Mike Braun sign his first bill as governor, House Enrolled Act 1149. Authored by Rep. Kendell Culp, INFB’s vice president, this will create a new online portal that would house helpful information farmers need to succeed, including grant opportunities, updates to federal and state regulations and an updated inventory of lost farmland.
Delaware County Farm Bureau surfaced the need for this bill as part of its policy development process. Passed unanimously by both houses and signed by the governor, House Enrolled Act 1012 requires law enforcement agencies to inform property owners of damage to property in the event of a motor vehicle accident. This includes damage to the owner's real property, crops or structures, and also requires that the landowner be notified of any debris resulting from a motor vehicle accident.
